Why Is TMS Therapy a Promising Treatment for Trauma Survivors?

Living with trauma can be incredibly challenging, often affecting every aspect of one’s life. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can lead to symptoms such as re-experiencing the traumatic event, avoidance, and heightened anxiety. At CNSL, we understand these struggles and are dedicated to helping trauma survivors reclaim their lives. One promising treatment option we offer is Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) therapy. Our counselors help you explore why TMS therapy could be a possible solution for those suffering from PTSD.

What Is TMS Therapy?

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) therapy is a non-invasive treatment that uses magnetic fields to stimulate nerve cells in the brain. During a TMS session for depression or PTSD, an electromagnetic coil is placed against the scalp, delivering magnetic pulses to activate regions of the brain involved in mood control and depression. It’s thought to improve mood by stimulating areas with decreased activity during depression.

Why TMS Therapy Can Help Trauma Survivors

Non-Invasive Treatment

One of the major advantages of TMS therapy is that it is non-invasive. Unlike other treatments that may require surgery or medication, TMS involves placing a coil on the scalp to deliver magnetic pulses. This non-surgical approach makes it a less intimidating option for many patients. The process is simple and straightforward, typically carried out in a healthcare provider’s office or clinic.

Minimal Side Effects

Another compelling reason to consider TMS therapy is its minimal side effects. In clinical trials, patients have reported only mild discomforts, such as headaches or slight skin irritation at the site of the electrodes. These side effects are usually short-lived and manageable, making TMS a safer alternative to traditional drug therapies, which can sometimes come with a host of side effects, including weight gain, sexual dysfunction and emotional numbness.

High Success Rates

TMS therapy has demonstrated high success rates in clinical trials. For instance, one study showed that 64% of patients treated with TMS experienced significant improvement in their symptoms after just four weeks, compared to only 2% who received sham TMS (a placebo). Even more impressive is that, at a three-month follow-up, 80% of patients still had clinically significant improvements compared to 35% in the placebo group. These statistics highlight the effectiveness of TMS therapy in providing long-lasting relief from PTSD symptoms.

Safety and Effectiveness

TMS therapy is not only effective but also safe. It has been FDA-approved since 2008 for treating major depressive disorder and has shown promise for PTSD. The procedure is performed under the supervision of a psychiatrist while the patient remains awake and alert, ensuring a controlled and monitored environment. The treatment sessions are typically short, lasting about 20 minutes, allowing patients to resume their daily activities immediately afterward.

By targeting specific areas of the brain associated with mood regulation and anxiety, TMS therapy offers a focused approach to treating PTSD. This targeted stimulation can help alleviate symptoms like re-experiencing, avoidance and heightened anxiety, providing patients with much-needed relief.
