The TMS therapy process: What Can Clients Expect During Treatment?

At CNSL, we understand that taking the first step toward mental health improvement can be daunting. Many of our clients come to us feeling stuck and uncertain about the future. It’s normal to feel nervous about trying new treatments, including Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) therapy. This innovative treatment has shown promising results in the management of various mental health conditions, and we’re here to guide you through what to expect during the TMS therapy process. Our goal is to help you approach your treatment with confidence and hope.

Understanding TMS Therapy

TMS therapy is a non-invasive procedure that uses magnetic fields to stimulate nerve cells in the brain to improve symptoms of depression and other mental health disorders. At CNSL, we prioritize your wellness and tailor a treatment plan that aligns with your unique needs. Whether you’ve tried other forms of therapy without success or are looking for an alternative approach, TMS might be the solution you need.

Your First TMS Treatment

Your journey begins with an initial appointment, designed to customize the treatment to your specific needs. This session involves a “mapping” process where an electromagnetic coil is positioned against your scalp. Through this coil, magnetic pulses are delivered, aiming to stimulate areas of your brain associated with mood regulation. The first session will last about an hour, during which we’ll determine the optimal placement for the coil and the appropriate dose of magnetic energy for your treatment.

During the Treatment

Once the mapping is complete, the actual treatment sessions can begin. These are generally shorter and require your presence in our office or clinic five times a week for 4 to 6 weeks. During each session, you’ll be seated comfortably with earplugs, and the coil will be placed against your head. When activated, you’ll experience a tapping sensation accompanied by a clicking sound. While some clients report mild discomfort or a headache, these are temporary and subside quickly after the session. Rest assured, you’ll remain awake and alert throughout the procedure, and the treatment itself varies in duration, depending on the stimulation pattern used.

Expected Results

Many clients report significant improvements in their mood and overall mental health following TMS therapy. The procedure is designed to activate regions of the brain that may have decreased activity due to depression, thereby easing symptoms and improving your quality of life. It’s important to remember that results can vary, and our team at CNSL is committed to supporting you every step of the way.
